Planting Seeds History – We’ve Come Thus Far by Faith

Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance is a non denominational ministry founded by Apostle Betty Joyce Johnson. It has grown and evolved over the years expanding not only space wise but also in terms of membership, activities and services provided to the community. The recent purchase of a three-building complex has enhanced our ability to meet those needs. The Board of Trustees, consisting of Assistant Pastor Elder Gloria J. Matory and Elder Jessie Walls, provides the support and practical leadership needed to ensure that the mission of the ministry is fulfilled in keeping with the calling God has mandated for the church and within their lives.

But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” Exodus 17:12

Just as Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Moses, one on either side, so does our associate minister, deacons and deaconesses support the executive leadership in a similar manner. These include Associate Minister Evangelist Maxine Haymore; Deacons Cecil Rouser, Ralph Brown, Paul Johnson and Charles Wesley; and Deaconesses Gloria Boles, Ruth Wright and Jonita Smith.

Background. Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance began as an outreach ministry in 1991 with individuals from all walks of life meeting at the home of Pastor Betty J. Johnson for prayer and Bible study. Led by the Holy Spirit and being obedient to God’s will, Pastor Johnson and her mother, the late Greta Mae Blue, successfully obtained legal status for what would become Planting Seeds Outreach Ministry. With a board comprised of Greta Blue (deceased); Evangelist Dee Chiplin; Sister Brenda Hawthorne; Elder Desiree’ Dillon-Johnson (deceased) and Pastor Ted Watson, the Planting Seeds Outreach Ministry was incorporated on July 19, 1993.

Having gradually outgrown its prayer-service-in-the-living room beginnings, on May 1, 1994, the ministry found a new location at 4125 West Northside Drive in Jackson, Mississippi where both the social service outreach and the spiritual devotion areas began to flourish. A year later (May 23, 1995), the Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance was separately incorporated. From that point forward, Planting Seeds Outreach Ministry and Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance became independent entities with a shared purpose of reaching out to the world with love and compassion.

Over the years we have moved several times but always within easy access of those we serve. Each new location provided us with previously unrealized opportunities to touch lives and respond to God’s calling in additional ways. From September 1998 to December 2007 the church and the Outreach was located at 4914 North State Street, Jackson, MS. The continued growth of members and friends coupled with evolving activities in keeping with their needs made acquiring more suitable space an increasing imperative. Heeding an inner prompting to “pitch a tent in a land in which I will show you,” in 2009 Apostle Betty J. Johnson and the leadership began a search for more flexible accommodations to anchor and grow.

A nearby facility, housed within an office park at 5472 Watkins Drive, Jackson, MS, served as a temporary location until God’s plan to take the Church to another level became more clearly manifested. The prayerful desire of having a place to house a separate sanctuary, educational/fellowship center, administrative offices, and an outreach ministry was realized when land and three buildings were purchased and customized to accommodate these functions. On June 2010, we moved to the present location at 5360 Executive Place, Jackson, MS in north Jackson off I-55 North.

The Church Today. Planting Seeds Church, Activity Center/Fellowship Hall and Administrative Complex is comprised of a large sanctuary, a fellowship hall, serenity room/library for daily meditation, two full kitchens, six offices, five classrooms and a social service center that is supported by church and other donors but falls under the auspices of the separate Planting Seeds Outreach Ministry.

Under the pastorate of Apostle Betty J. Johnson, Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance has established a children and youth ministry; a women’s ministry; a men’s ministry; a van ministry; a prison ministry; a drug and alcohol ministry; a literacy ministry; a praise team; adult and youth praise dancers; a church/community liaison ministry and a host of special committees.

More than Conquers. From its early beginning to the present, Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance has been a ministry deeply reflective of a love for God and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Its sturdy foundation rests on an abiding faith in the one and only true God and obedience to His Word. In our actions and outreach we are guided by the words found in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (KJV).

Visit us at Planting Seeds Church of Deliverance where you will find loving hearts and open minds. We invite you to worship and work alongside us as we reach out to a world that needs the transforming power of God, Jesus and the Word to become “more than conquerors”.
